The Presidential Campaign begins in the Streets ...

Campaigning definition ... Antoine and I walking down the street talking to people. Pretty simple; pretty powerful!

As you can see from the new photos, we have taken the Presidential campaign to the streets of Yaounde in our "campaign" uniform. Apparently it has caused quite a stir as the first day we were campaigning, we were approached by two military police and another guy claiming to be a policeman and told we had to go and see his "big man".

So, in true Camerounian style, we were marched back down the middle of the street we had just 'worked', in the pouring rain by this time, as a spectacle for all to see: policeman not in uniform, Antoine and I, with two military police pulling up the rear! Quite a site in our multi colored uniforms. You might be thinking that this had to do with our 'campaigning'.

True to protocol, a letter was submitted, and signed as accepted by the appropriate Ministry informing them the day before, that we would be doing precisely what we were doing - walking - marching in the streets, talking to people about our political platform. This is NOT against the law.

When we asked the policeman what the infraction was, he informed us we were wearing the Camerounian flag and that we needed to be taken to the Police office for questioning. The first place we were marched was the Ministry of Defense, where the Military police were stationed at the end of the street we were on. We stood there for a couple of minutes and were later, 'escorted' to the Police office down the street a bit further. When we got there we were again told to wait -outside in the rain - for the 'big man' to come and question us. After we informed them that Antoine is the President of his political party, the two military police, just mysteriously disappeared.

There were about four guys standing in front of the police 'office' which is literally a 20' shipping container with a desk and a couple of chairs inside. When they asked us and the policeman what we had done, they were informed that there was some infraction and we needed to wait. After finding out that the infraction was that we were apparently "wearing the Camerounian flag" they advised us to just go...and after a couple of minutes, and the policeman's 'big man' didn't arrive, we walked away.

So, what was this all about? Well, we have come to the conclusion it was probably about money! There was no infraction, in fact we consulted an attorney and we still have not found any legal Article which prohibits anyone from wearing the Cameroun flag. Doing something to disgrace the Cameroun flag is certainly an infraction...but this was not the case.

Now the really interesting thing is - the star on our uniform is a six-sided Star of David. The star in the Cameroun flag is a five-sided star. Even if they didn't like what we were doing - we were not wearing the Cameroun flag; thus no infraction and no justification for what was done. These guys didn't even know their own flag!

Our conclusion therefore is they wanted money because I am a "white woman" and therefore am routinely targeted for extortion of money whenever and wherever possible. You name it - from buying apples and oranges, to taxi drivers in the streets. They see a "white woman" and the price of everything is considerably inflated even though I am now living here with my husband who is Camerounian! Life in Cameroun - welcome to it.

It makes me very angry when I know I am being targeted and taken advantage of in financial terms. I know first hand what racial discrimination is. May I never forget what this feels like.

Back to the campaign...

We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to our message. We have been in the streets three days now and everywhere we go we are surrounded by mostly young people (age 20 - 35) or so who are demanding that something change. These young people are not invested in the current 'system', have no families, no jobs and no hope of a better tomorrow. In fact, they have nothing to lose by making their voices heard, loud and clear.

In Douala just a couple of weeks ago, they took to the streets themselves with placards demanding that the constitution not be changed to allow the current President to run for a third consecutive term in 2011. This created quite an incident in the streets of Douala with the police being involved there because of the disruption it caused. No, we didn't have anything to do with this; I only mention it to say the people of this country - and mostly the young people of this country are demanding the government does something to improve their lives, and not 20 years from now!

Our experiences here will make a fabulous book; maybe even a feature film in time. We came here to change things, shake things up and apparently from all appearances, we are doing just that.

Yes, we are campaigning to be the next President of Cameroun and will not give up until we are successful. This blog is my statement to the world, my story of this journey. It is not just my journey, however as we have seen as evidenced. It is the story and accompanying journey of all Camerounians who have waited more than 25 years to see their lives improve on a day to day basis; and they are still waiting. We've taken up the mantle for all Camerounians!

À propos où se trouve Dzeng…

Le Cameroun est la réponse à la question ci-dessus, à environ 49 kilomètres de Yaoundé. Nous avons été invités par le maire de Dzeng, à aider cette communauté à préparer un plan directeur programme-cadre pour le développement et à rechercher les investisseurs pour aider à réaliser leur rêve qui est de reconstruire leur ville avec l'infrastructure et les technologies les plus modernes. Antoine et moi ressentont ici une opportunité et une occasion certes incroyable de créer avec Dzeng, une ville modèle qui servira de catalyseur pour l'ensemble du Cameroun. Nous avons ici un village qui a été créé par l'administration camerounaise dès l’année 1960 avec l’indépendance du Cameroun. Et depuis lors rien n’a été fait pour que les années qui se sont succédées les citoyens de cette commune puissent bénéficier d’un bien être et d’un développement durable.

Je dois admettre, que cela a été un moment de très grande difficulté à visiter ce secteur. Cette visite a évoqué en moi beaucoup de questions, qui sont encore sans réponse. Nous avons trouvé un autocollant sous fond de drapeau américain sur les portes de l'hôpital communal avec les termes suivants :"Avec l'amitié des personnes des États-Unis d'Amérique’’.

L'ancien ambassadeur des États-Unis a fait une visite à ce secteur en juin 2005, à l'invitation spéciale de l’actuel maire. Il y a eu des images prises avec le journal et la TV (CRTV); en effet beaucoup de tapage et de fanfares ont été faits autour de cette visite donc le caractère était culturel.

Les questions qui m'ont préoccupée et continue de l’être, est de savoir pourquoi depuis cette visite rien ne s’est produit, aucun changement depuis cette époque n’est a constaté ni avec les personnes ni sur le plan infrastructurel de cette communauté et qu’en est il de l'engagement de l'amitié avec les États-Unis ? Pourquoi l'hôpital communal n'a-t-il pas de la toile et les patients se trouvent sur de vieux, sales matelas ? Comment la salle probablement « des interventions chirurgicales ne pourrait-elle pas ressembler à quelque chose d’humain » quand il y avait des toiles d'araignée dans les coins des salles ? Et que diriez-vous des équipements de laboratoire, où étaient-elles ? Il y avait une salle, avec une étiquette sur la porte qui a décrit la salle comme " ; Laboratoire" ; mais ce que j'ai vu était un espace vide avec absolument aucun équipement de laboratoire et veilles bouteilles d’oxygène rangées sur un étagère très sale. Est ce bien ce que nous appellerons amitié avec les États-Unis d'Amérique ?

Rien ne pourrait m'avoir préparé pour ce que j'ai vu et ce que j'ai éprouvé mardi, 08 Janvier 2008. C'était vrai qu’il ne faut trop en faire une affaire personnelle faute d’en souffrir. Mais lorsque nous connaissons certaine histoire transformée en long-métrage et dépeignant les Stars de films et autres grands acteurs, qui ont déterminé le cours de nos vies aux États-Unis; ou encore de l’Afrique observée par des millions d'Américains tandis qu'ils sont entrain de consommer du maïs éclaté beurré dans les théâtres conditionnés par air.

L’une des questions qui continue de me chagriner et que je demande Comment ose-t-il (l’Ambassadeur des États-Unis d’Amérique au Cameroun) après avoir vu et éprouvé comment les citoyens de cette communauté vivent au quotidien, peut il s’en aller poursuivre la vie sans une pensée de comment faire pour aider ces gens en sortir de cette misère humaine et physique? Je suis américaine, une américaine fière de l’être, et qui prétend aujourd’hui au fauteuil de la première Dame du Cameroun, comment puis je ne pas y penser? Comment ne pas croire qu’un jour nous pourrions aller au-delà du rêve caresser et de voir notre objectif se feindre passage parmi les plus superflus et des plus proverbiaux pour être au milieu de tous comme la lumière et l’espoir de toute une communauté?

Non. Ceci a renforcé ma résolution et mon courage de rassembler, d’apporter au Cameroun, ma nouvelle maison, toutes les ressources que Dieu m'a données ou a mit à ma disposition. C'est mon engagement devant Dieu et pour le peuple du Cameroun et plus récemment mon engagement devant la communauté de Dzeng. Moi, comme une américaine tend ma main dans l'amitié et pour vous assure par la même que deux ans et demi ne vont plus s’écouler (2 ans de ½) avant qu’un changement ne vienne transformer le visage de ce village.

Nous avons mis juste quelques images sur le BLOG et espérerons ajouter plus d’images dès que nous serons en possession de l’appareil photo numériques des amis qui ont également pris des photos en ce jour. Je vous invite à partager avec moi pendant que le voyage continue à dévoiler tous ses secrets et surprises. Puis je ne plus jamais perdre de vue Dzeng et aider à l’accomplissement de ce rêve pour toutes ces personnes d'un meilleur futur pour les enfants de ce beau village ; en effet tous les villages dans ce beau pays, Cameroun !

And just where is Dzeng...

Cameroun is the answer to the question above, about 49 kilometers from Yaounde. We have been invited by the Mayor of Dzeng, to help this community prepare a master plan for development and bring in investors to assist in realizing their dream which is to rebuild their town with modern infrastructure and amenities. Antoine and I feel this is an incredible opportunity to create with Dzeng, a model town replicated throughout Cameroun. We have here a village which was granted by the Administration in 1960. The ensuing years have not been kind to the citizens of this commune.

I must admit, it was enlightening and disturbing to visit this area. It brought up many questions, which are still unanswered. We found a sticker on the doors of the communal hospital with an American Flag and the words, "With the Friendship of the People of the United States of America". The former Ambassador of the United States made a visit to this area in June, 2005, at the special invitation of the current Mayor. There were pictures along with newspaper and TV footage taken; indeed much fanfare was made of this cultural exchange and visit.

The questions which plagued me were and continue to be, what has happened since this time with the people of this community and the pledge of friendship by the United States? Why did the communal hospital not have any linen and the patients lying on old, dirty mattresses? How could the surgery room possibly 'pass muster' when there were cobwebs in the corners of the rooms? And what about the lab facilities, where were they? There was a room, with a label on the door which described the room as "Laboratory" but what I saw was an empty space with absolutely no lab equipment and simply old bottles lining a very dirty bookshelf. Is this what we Americans call friendship?

Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw and what I experienced on Tuesday. This was real, live, up close and personal. Not some story made into a feature film portraying what filmstars have determined is the "in place to shoot", in Africa watched by millions of Americans while they swallow down buttered popcorn in air conditioned theaters.

How can I after seeing and experiencing how the citizens of this community live, every day of their lives imagine I could go back to my ignorant bliss? Me, a proud American, who claims to desire the post of First Lady of Cameroun, how can I go about my normal day and pretend I didn't see the proverbial white elephant standing in the middle of the living room?

No. This has strengthened my resolve and courage to bring together, bring to Cameroun, my new home, all the resources that God has given to me at my disposal. This is my commitment to the people of Cameroun and most recently my commitment to the people of Dzeng. I, as an American will extend my hand in friendship and make sure another 2 1/2 years don't go by without any changes to the face of this village.

We have put just a few pictures on the blog and will hope to add more from friends' digital cameras which were also taken that day. I invite you all to share with me as the journey continues to unfold. May I never lose sight of Dzeng and her people's dream of a better future for the children of this beautiful village; indeed all the villages in this beautiful country, Cameroun!

Trentaine De Prière Pour La Paix Au Cameroun

Car nous commençons le premier dimanche de l'année, nous avons assisté à la masse au Monastère Notre Dame DES Bénédictins du Mont Fébé pour le service de 11H00 du matin.

Antoine et moi avons décidé de marcher à pied pour arriver au Monastère et nous nous sommes associés au premier service de la nouvelle année en tant tel et pour marquer un symbole, une action, montrant nos intentions de marcher dans la grâce avec Dieu dans notre mission ici au Cameroun. Nous demanderions à tout le monde de se joindre à nous dans cette prière et pour la paix continue de régner en cette nouvelle année 2008 au Cameroun.

Car nous sommes arrivés au monastère avant le début de la messe, a été une grande épreuve pour moi étant donné que je suis ne suis pas chrétienne catholique. Tout d'abord, l’entrée de l'église était complètement vide et des chaises étaient placées à l'extérieur. En fait, nous avons eu le choix d’aller à l'intéri6eur ou s’asseoir à l'extérieur pendant le déroulement du service. Nous avons décidé de nous asseoir où les deux se réunissent, ni à l’intérieur et ni à l’extérieur mais juste entre les deux parce qu'il y avait une rangée des chaises qui faisait aussi la limite entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur et aussi entre de petits tabourets avec des sièges en tissu plus loin à l'intérieur. Il n'y avait aucun vêtement de cérémonie fleuri d'or, comme c’est le cas dans d’autres églises catholiques et aucune décoration sur les fenêtres colorées, pas même de bougies de lumière électrique des côtés des murs de l'église, mais de bougies blanches avec de supports pour bougie. C'était une église très simple en comparaison avec toute celle que nous avons jusqu’à présent visitée, particulièrement aux États-Unis. En fait, le dernier service de dimanche où nous sommes allé à était à la cathédrale nationale de Washington sur la rue Albans à Washington, DC. Pendant notre séjour à Washington, DC nous avons eu le privilège d'assister à la célébration d'anniversaire du Centenaire (100 ans) depuis la pose de la première pierre de la cathédrale, 1907-2007, à la fin du mois de septembre 2007. C'est une merveille structurale et architecturale, et les mémoires que j'ai de Washington, DC., de la cathédrale nationale sera avec moi jusqu'au bout de mes jours sur cette planète terre.

Par contraste radical, l'église que nous sommes entrée à ici au Cameroun était simple mais respectueuse. Les personnes étaient les mêmes ; dans le repos pieux pendant le service. Je ne pense pas qu'il y avait vraiment n'importe quelle différence entre les deux services ; on était dans une cathédrale grande et on était dans la maison simple du monastère de Bénédictins du Mont Fébé. Toutes les deux sont des maisons de Dieu et ainsi sacré.

Bien que je ne sois pas une catholique, il était stressant pour une américaine d’écouter la célébration de la messe en langue française et pour apprécier les chansons de l'éloge. C'est où Antoine est à l'aise comme endroit pour le culte. J'honore cela et le soutiens en allant avec lui.
Commence demain la nouvelle semaine, et la première de la nouvelle année d'affaires. Nous avons beaucoup de d’initiative à promouvoir et même quelques produits pour commencer le lancement. C'est excitant sachant nous avons avec nous un certain nombre important de technologies à faire bénéficier au notre pays le Cameroun sur tous les aspects de vies quotidiennes des Camerounais'.

As we begin the first Sunday of the year, we attended Mass at the Monastère Notre Dame des Bénédictins du Mont Fébé for the morning service.

Antoine and I decided to walk up to the monastery and joined in the first service of the New Year as more than a symbol, an action, showing our intentions to walk in Grace with God in our mission here in Cameroun. We would ask all of you to join with us in this prayer for peace in this New Year 2008.

As we arrived at the monastery it was a very different experience for me. First of all, the back of the church was completely open to the outside. In fact, we had the choice of sitting inside or outside for the service. We decided to sit where the two meet, because there was a row of chairs with backs on them and not just the little stools with cloth seats further inside. There were no ornate gold vestments, no rose colored windows, not even electric light sconces on the sides of the walls of the church, but white candles in candle holders. This was a very simple church in comparison with all I have ever been in, especially in the United States. In fact, the last Sunday service we went to was at the Washington National Cathedral on St. Albans in Washington, DC. This Cathedral has it all. During our sojourn in Washington, DC we had the privilege of attending the anniversary celebration of 100 years since the laying of the foundation stone of the Cathedral, 1907-2007 , in the end of September. It is a structural and architectural marvel, and the memories I have of the Washington National Cathedral will be with me until the last of my days on this plane.

By stark contrast, the church we went to here in Cameroun was simple but reverent. The people were the same; in prayerful repose during the service. I don’t think there was really any difference between the two services; one was in a grand Cathedral and one was in the simple home of the monastery of Benedictions du Mont Febe. Both are houses of God and thus sacred.

Although I am not a Catholic, it was entrancing to hear the prayers (in French) and enjoy the songs of praise. This is where Antoine feels at home as a place for worship. I honor that and support him by going along with him.

Tomorrow starts the new week, and the first of the business new year. We have many irons in the fire and even a few new products to begin marketing. It is exciting knowing we have access to many technologies that will benefit all aspects of Camerounians’ every day lives.

IT IS A JOY AND PRIVILEGE TO ADDRESS THIS MESSAGE TO YOU, INDIVIDUALLY AND TO THE PEOPLE OF OUR NATION.

AFTER THE MESSAGE OF HIS EXCELLENCY MR. PAUL BIYA, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC, TO THE NATION ON DECEMBER 31, 2007;
WE HEREBY SEND TO YOU OUR WARMEST WISHES AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS NEW YEAR.

WE LIVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF MODERNIZATION: DEVELOPMENT IS NOT EFFORTLESS, NOTHING IS EASILY GRANTED, AND NOTHING IS GIVEN OFFHANDEDLY.
