MESSAGE OF THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF RDPF (KUMZSE), ENDING AND BEGINNING OF YEAR WISHES TO CAMERONIANS

MY DEAR FELLOW COUNTRYMEN,

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009!

IT IS A JOY AND PRIVILEGE TO ADDRESS THIS MESSAGE TO YOU, INDIVIDUALLY AND TO THE PEOPLE OF OUR NATION.

WE HEREBY SEND TO YOU OUR WARMEST WISHES AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS NEW YEAR.

ONE YEAR ENDS AND ANOTHER BEGINS, BRINGING WITH IT AN ASSESSMENT OF THE YEAR PAST: A PERSONAL ASSESSMENT, A FAMILY ASSESSMENT, A COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT AND A SOCIETAL ASSESSMENT.

WE ARE CONSCIOUS THAT EACH ONE HAS MADE HIS OWN APPRAISAL AND KNOWS WHAT THAT ENCOMPASSES. WE PONDER:

- HOW TO MAKE THIS NEW YEAR MORE PROFITABLE, ABUNDANT, MORE PROMISING THAN THE LAST?

- HOW TO EXPERIENCE MORE HAPPINESS AND JOY?

- HOW TO ALLOW FOR NEW AND BETTER POSSIBILITIES FOR EVERYONE?

- HOW TO FINISH OLD BUSINESS AND PUT AN END TO ALL THAT WE KNOW AS NEGATIVE?

- HOW TO MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES MORE GENEROUS, MORE INTERDEPENDENT AND MORE CONGENIAL?

- HOW TO CREATE GREATER SOCIAL JUSTICE?

SO MANY QUESTIONS ARISE AT THE END OF A YEAR AND THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER!

WE LIVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF MODERNIZATION: DEVELOPMENT

IS NOT EFFORTLESS, NOTHING IS EASILY GRANTED, AND NOTHING IS GIVEN OFFHANDEDLY.

WE MUST DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO DESERVE WHAT WE RECEIVE; WE MUST WORK VERY HARD FOR OUR WAGES; WE MUST BE COMPETITIVE AND HONEST WITH OURSELVES IN ORDER TO KEEP THE RESPECT OF THOSE WHO DESIRE TO WORK WITH US.

MY WIFE AND I HAVE RETURNED TO CAMEROUN AT THE END OF 2007 AND THE BEGINNING OF 2008 TO OFFER THE CAMEROUNIAN PEOPLE, THE CHOICE OF A REAL, DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT, A VOICE.

WE CAME FOUR YEARS BEFORE THE ELECTIONS OF (2007-2011) TO GIVE PEOPLE TIME TO GET TO KNOW US, TO REDISCOVER
CAMEROUN AND HER PEOPLE, TO SHARE WITH THEIR SUFFERINGS, THEIR CONCERNS, THEIR ASPIRATIONS AS WELL AS THEIR HOPES AND DREAMS.

WE ARE AT THE BEDSIDE OF OUR COMPATRIOTS TO SAY THIS TO THEM:
“YOU ARE NO MORE ALONE, AND WE DO NOT FEEL ALONE IN YOUR COMPANY”.

FOR THE PAST TWENTY-NINE YEARS (1982-2011), THE PRESIDENT IN OFFICE HAS BEEN ATTEMPTING TO PROMOTE DEVELOPMENT AND WE ARE HERE TO TELL YOU THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE POSSIBLE WAY OUT. IT IS YOU WHO HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE THIS DECISION BECOME OUR SHARED REALITY.

“A NEW DEMOCRACY IS POSSIBLE IN CAMEROUN, HENCEFORTH.”

THE PREVIOUS ELECTIONS (1992, 1997, 2004, 2007 AND 2009) SHOWED THAT THE CAMEROUNIAN PEOPLE HAVE REACHED A POLITICAL MATURITY WHICH ENABLES THEM FROM NOW ON TO MAKE SUCH A CHOICE.

THE FELLED VICTORY ORGANIZED BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION LEFT CAMEROUNIANS WITH A PENCHANT FOR NEW LEADERSHIP. YES! ALL SAY IT, CAMEROUN NEEDS A NEW POLITICAL LEADER, FRESH, SINCERE, CHARISMATIC, TRUSTWORTHY, DETERMINED, HONEST AND PATRIOTIC.

WE BELIEVE WE CAN ANSWER THIS CALL FOR NEW LEADERSHIP IN ALL HUMILITY.

IN 1997 I PARTICIPATED IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS TO MARK THIS COMMITMENT, AND AS AN OPPOSITION LEADER TO CREATE A NEW ERA OF DEMOCRACY IN OUR BELOVED COUNTRY.

WE COME TO SAY TO YOU THAT WE ARE READY TO SERVE. YOU DESERVE TO EXPERIENCE THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF CAMEROUN AS A LIGHT, A BEACON TO GUIDE US ALL.

MAY GOD BLESS US ALL! MAY GOD BLESS OUR FAMILIES! MAY GOD BLESS CAMEROUN AND AFRICA! AMEN!

Text of Video - SOCAPSSI-Sarl Company Mission Statement (Revised)

SOCAPSSI- Sarl Company Mission Outlined

Nature abhors a vacuum, and the first law in business is to find a need and fill it.

A gap in the application of the law nº 84/07 of July 4, 1984 amending the law nº 69/LF/18 of November 10, 1969 for Social Security has left 70% - 80% of the population of Cameroun, ineligible for subscription into the National Social Insurance Fund (NSIF/CNPS); namely the informal sector. Currently, only those ‘employed’ have access to inscription into this national social insurance fund.

SOCAPSSI-Sarl was created to be a bridge between the informal sector and NSIF/CNPS (National Social Insurance Fund/Caisse Nationale de Prévoyance Sociale) giving those entrepreneurs a structure which not only conforms to the law, but permits them to contribute directly into NSIF/CNPS. Now, all Camerounians have the ability to protect themselves against the risk of accident, illness, disability and death, giving them family benefits and allowances for their children now and in the future as well as planning for retirement income. The National Social Insurance Fund program is a powerful weapon against poverty.

The intellectual basis permitting the President of the Republic to create the Ministry of Work and Social Security, came as a result of The World Bank study done in 2000, which analyzed the reforms necessary to ensure all Camerounians benefit from the law as stated below. Please see attached.

SOCAPSSI-Sarl also addresses many of the social issues modern governments all face; namely employment of the youth and the creation of jobs. Most college graduates today in Cameroun, complete their studies receiving their diplomas only to discover that there are no jobs available for them to support their families. They consider being ‘employed’ to mean getting jobs in bureaus and or in government administrative positions. The entrepreneurial spirit is what makes any country great. Cameroun is no exception as evidenced by 70% - 80% in the informal sector. Yet many in this segment of the population are unaware of the benefits available to them through existing government structures, i.e. the NSIF/CNPS program. What is needed is a plan to introduce the informal sector to the benefits of inscription in NSIF/CNPS and this is the void SOCAPSSI-Sarl will fill by training and developing the human resources as entrepreneurs themselves. Within the first three to five years, SOCAPSSI-Sarl will create more than 12,000 ‘jobs’.

The mission of SOCAPSSI-Sarl is two fold. First to facilitate the enactment of the law stated above for enrollment into the National Social Insurance Fund by a private (marketing) company, as well as to recommend all SOCAPSSI-Sarl clients to open up bank accounts for receipt of benefits. Our clients will pay their cotisations directly to NSIF/CNPS not to SOCAPSSI-Sarl each month. SOCAPSSI-Sarl will be paid directly by NSIF/CNPS based on the number of individuals who inscribe through our company and will receive a financial guarantee from NSIF/CNPS ensuring our honorarium for services rendered is paid.
The funds to justify opening up this new market for NSIF/CNPS will come directly from the “new SOCAPSSI-Sarl clients” included in their cotisations and not from the current budget of NSIF/CNPS. This creates a win/win situation for all. By recommending admission of our clients into NSIF/CNPS to include opening a formal bank account, we will effectively be responsible for pumping much needed capital into the economic and banking systems of Cameroun. We believe that it is in this way that Cameroun can stand on its own and take control of its economic development at the national level. The methodology we utilize is direct, transparent and will be a tool in fighting against corruption.

As an American citizen, I am bound by law to the foreign anti-corruption laws of the United States of America. It is vital that SOCAPSSI-Sarl is held to a higher standard, both philosophically as well as technologically, being a model company in Cameroun in all facets of its business.

God bless all of us. God bless this initiative. God bless Cameroun and America.

- l’architecture nouvelle, création d’un gouvernement de quinze ministères composés de dix ministères de région et de cinq ministères de technocratie;
- les réformes de notre système éducationnel et de notre système académique, faire de l’école une vraie raison d’être pour l’enfant et l’adolescent, de l’université un creuset du savoir, de la recherche et du développement pour le jeune et l’adulte;

Amen!

Pour le RDPF-KUMZSE
Le Président National,

Dr Antoine De Padoue NDEMMANU

A question of democracy in the twenty first century?

What is democracy? The example we have witnessed in Cameroun defies all definition of the word. It is clear that the people of this country do not know, nor do they understand the meaning of democracy, or the power it gives to the people. This is not their fault. They have not been educated to understand its meaning and for a purpose. People are kept in servitude when they have no voice. Cameroun is a Republic with a multi-party democratic electoral system instituted in 1990 and guaranteed by its Constitution(s) of 1996 and the newest iteration, 2008.

How can a President agree to and sign into law, a Constitution which defines the length of his term (seven years), as well as the term limits (two contiguous terms) and then three years prior to the designated end of both terms, modify and amend it to allow him for all intents and purposes to be “a President for life"?

Let’s call a spade a spade. This is just another example of the rights of the people being dismissed by the whim of one man who has the power to do so. In modern terms this is what we call a dictatorship; although cleverly disguised as a democratic Republic today, in 2008. What’s a Constitution for anyway, if we can’t change it willy nilly whenever we want to and for whatever purpose serves to keep the status quo in the halls of power? I was taught that the Constitution in the United States at least was written to preserve the ‘inalienable rights’ of each citizen as granted by God; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Isn’t it the same for Camerounians or was our Constitution written for a different purpose?

President Biya has been successful in protecting his position at the expense of the eighteen million Camerounians who continue to suffer under a government which does scant nothing for its citizens. And in the event of the “impossible” and no longer President, the latest amendment as signed in April, 2008 guarantees that he can not be brought to trial nor be judged for his crimes. Ya can’t beat that now can you?

It is the citizens of this country who bear the brunt of a system, inherited from their grandparents a mere forty years ago, which promised revolutionary change at their independence in 1960, but which has only served to keep the wealthy few as the ‘power elite’. The rest of the nation barely eek out a living and have enough money to feed themselves and their families despite the vast wealth in this country’s natural resources. Cameroun is not a poor country.

And, doesn’t there have to be ‘opposition political parties’ in order to have a multi-party system? Where are they? In a country that has 200+ registered political parties, why are we not hearing the voice of the people expressed through these political bodies? Where are their leaders and more importantly, what are the issues they are seeking to address? On what platform do they stand?

Politics in this country has become nothing more than a debate between the personalities of a few who seek to enrich themselves when offered Ministerial positions in exchange for the votes of their constituents. Sad but true and is about to change.

Moses, used as God’s instrument, said to the Pharaoh of Egypt, “Let my people go” . Throughout history, the oppressed have ultimately had their voices heard. We will see the same in Cameroun, for if we believe there is a just God, we must also believe that the voices of those suffering in this country will too, one day be heard. It is for this reason, and this reason alone Antoine and I are in Cameroun today.

God Bless Cameroun. God Bless Africa.

May 1st – A tribute to Djoumessi Mathias

May 1st is a special day in the history of West Cameroun. It is the day to commemorate a man who in most recent history, helped change the face of West Cameroun, Dschang, and most specifically Foréké, Dschang. I’m only just learning about this incredible Chief, and look forward to sharing more with you as time goes on. He was living proof that faith can move mountains and his faith shaped and changed the lives of all who knew him. He had a most significant effect on members of his own family, particularly in view of traditions long held in this tribal culture.

It has been two months now since my last blog post. I feel I’ve been irrevocably changed, from the inside out. I’ve learned what its like by actually living life in a village in Central Africa; Dschang. You have to understand that out of 18 million people, the two major cities of Yaounde and Douala have approximately four million people combined and there are perhaps a handful of villages the size of Dschang scattered throughout Cameroun. The rest of the population lives in very small communes and rural villages. There are even villages within 15 km from here which still do not have electricity. Oh, it is on the drawing board and may actually be available between now and 2013 despite the promise of the Head of State in his 2007 annual address to the Nation to bring consistent current to each and every Camerounian in all ten provinces.

Speaking of electricity, I thought I would take some time to tell a little story; one I’ve lived. The main power producer and distribution company is now (since 2002) owned by a US company, AES being the major shareholder. AES has operations all around the world, and are operating throughout Nigeria and Cameroun. Before 2002, the electricity company was owned and operated as a State owned company. Not good for the citizens of Cameroun. Do you know that if you had a complaint, back in the old days of course, that your bill wasn’t right for example, you might just find your electricity to your house just stop – say due to unexplainable and sudden technical difficulties with the pole or connection just outside. And, those “technical difficulties” might go on for long periods of time (sometimes weeks) due to the fact that qualified technicians just may never seem to find the time to come out and actually fix the problem. People were actually afraid of being made an example of, even if they were in the right about a problem. This was usually due to erroneous charges on invoices which could not be substantiated but appeared on the bills nonetheless.. Perhaps a faulty computer accounting program or some other such nonsense. It has, again in the past, been another sort of mafia in this country. People didn’t want these strange technical difficulties, so they just stayed quiet and allowed themselves to be abused by the literal local power(s) that be.

A little background here. After AES took over the State owned electricity company, managers of the newly formed company were in one of the local offices whereupon they discovered the wage statement of one of the employees. When asked if this statement represented a week’s wages, they were told no, this was per month. Horrified, AES decided to set up a commission to study and restructure wages for all employees of AES-SONEL.

The government of Cameroun, who retains a small percentage of ownership, flatly refused and did not permit any increase in wages or salaries for any of these employees. As a result, now that there are more and more customers who want current connected, there are not enough technicians to do the installations; not sufficient wages to attract skilled workers and thus again, the citizens of Cameroun suffer at the hands of their “duly elected” officials in government. If AES-SONEL would be willing to take the funds allocated for the increase in wages and salaries for their Camerounian employees, and instead allocate these funds for development, all Camerounians could and would benefit from funds available on the balance sheet as normal business operational expenses.

Back to our story. Mama owned a little business, in a small building in the front of her property which had a separate electricity meter to it. She owned a grinding machine which grinds all kinds of things…such as corn, peanuts and other things which then become the main staples of their diet here. She hasn’t run this business for several years now, and wanted to sell her machine to another business owner, and did so about a month ago. The problem began when the new owner of this grinding machine wanted the electricity turned back on so he could operate his business. Should have been just a phone call, n’est pas? Wrong answer!

Mama called the local electricity company and told them to stop the current, which they did in February, 2006. It is now 2008 and would you believe she was still receiving bills with amounts due throughout 2007 when there was zero electricity consumed, even according to the invoice. Now you can imagine, when Antoine and I decided to take a serious look into this issue, we didn’t like what we found. Being an American I decided we needed to ‘do something’ about this.

Antoine personally went to see the director in charge of customer service at the office in Dschang; as a matter of fact, he want twice on his own, and the third time decided he’d take me along to help solve the problem. After all, AES-SONEL is primarily operated now as a US company. Seems, that this particular customer service director, went to the old State “school of business”.

We waited for him in his office for about an hour or so at which time he finally received us. We had questions on some of the charges and in particular the continuation of invoices long after the current had been stopped to this meter. After he became belligerent and loud, which I’m sure he was taught in the ‘old school’, he told us that if we wanted copies of the invoices, we would have to have our attorney request them. You must know that “them be fightin words” to an American so I proceeded according to standard business protocol. I wrote a letter to his boss and outlined not only this customer service director’s unprofessionalism, but all of the inconsistencies I found through careful examination of all the invoices.

Oh, did I forget to mention, that when looking through the invoices, I found one with a consumption of 600 kWh in one month well after the electricity had been stopped and the final meter read. Even at the peak of the business usage, the consumption never went above 1/20th of that amount. Must have been another accounting error!

Things like this have been going on for decades here. Today, AES-SONEL is owned by a US company as the majority shareholder, and business ethics did in fact prevail. I’m happy to report that the director of customer service of the Dschang office was called into his boss’s office, informed that “the customer is king”, and told to make sure that ‘business as usual in the Dschang office’ strictly adheres to AES-SONEL’s regulations with regard to the polices and procedures for cutting off, assessing charges and reestablishing current in a new customer’s name. We know this first hand because Antoine was in the boss’s office while this reinstruction was going on.

On another note, the new photos posted are of a local Community effort Antoine decided was necessary for the area (quarter) of Dschang where mama’s property and the family compound is, called Ngui.

Whenever it rains, the dirt road which runs through the property floods and creates lakes (not pools) of water and mounds of red mud, which does not drain properly. The photos now posted are of the week long community manual labor force which hacked out a drainage ditch leading into the larger drainage pipes maintained by the public works department of Dschang. You will notice that some of the members of the manual labor force were only a couple of feet tall! And you will also see that the next President of the Republic himself does not shy away from such manual labor!

Speaking of rain, it certainly complicates getting the laundry done. Here, it takes between two to four days from the time you take the dirty laundry pile out, soak it in soap in a large tub of cold water which typically sits outside overnight, is hand scrubbed on a plastic board piece by piece, rinsed by hand two or three times with separate bucketsful of water carried from the borehole on the property, wrung out, and placed (without clothes pegs) on the outside laundry lines. Have you ever put out laundry on an outdoor clothes line without clothes pegs? Tricky to say the least and I have learned a new way of hanging up laundry because if not done properly, the clothes fly off the line the minute they start to dry only to land in the red dirt which is everywhere. And if that happens, cursing is the only recourse.

In order to get these clothes dry, one has to hope and pray that especially now as its the rainy season , we get enough hours of sun during the course of a day to actually dry the clothes. During this time, one has to stay at home in order to monitor the weather and clouds outside and time it just right to take down, fold, and put in the empty laundry tub, in the likely event it decides to suddenly pour, bring inside and wait until the monsoon stops. Once the rain completely stops, you can put out the laundry again and pray that the sun comes out to finish drying the wet clothes. As this process can take more than one day, when it gets dark one trudges outside yet again, to take down and fold the wet clothes, pile in the empty tub, start the process again the next morning. We don’t leave clothes out overnight as there are too many bandits and you might just see your favorite red shirt which you have lovingly washed by hand, on someone else downtown.

Only after the clothes have been hanging long enough to thoroughly dry can the laundry be brought in and ironed in an attempt to take away that cardboard feel when laundry has been left outside to dry for a couple of days. Phew! This is the way Antoine and I do laundry together once every two weeks.

I have all of my life, lifted the lid of the washer, added the laundry soap, bleach and water softener, turned a few knobs, walked away and waited the 40 minutes for the load to finish the wash cycle. I would repeat the process by opening the dryer door, throwing in the wet laundry, a dryer sheet, turning the appropriate knobs and the start button. After another 40 minutes or so, I would take the now dry clothes and if time permits, fold and put away. Certainly a different way of life and gives one a real appreciation for what many in developed nations totally take for granted as one of the most fundamental of chores of modern day life.

I have gone into such detail so that everyone who reads our blog can begin to understand just how difficult day to day life is here in the village in 2008. I have not even attempted to describe the process and time taken associated with hand planting and harvesting food grown in the ‘farm’ which consumes the course of a waking day not including the time it takes in the preparation of the food. This is typically women’s work, and a lot of women still cook on fires outside which adds another element; gathering and chopping wood for those fires, as well as starting and making up the fire. Not a packet taken out of the freezer, thrown in the microwave and dinner served in all of 15 minutes.

It is not hard to understand how the creative impulse (spark) simply does not exist when the day light hours are taken up with fundamental chores in order to keep the home environment somewhat clean as well as the body fed. Take all of this and multiply by the number of children in each family and you might just be able to begin to appreciate what the typical ‘wife’ has to do to care for her husband and children. There are not very many wives who work outside of the home and have professional careers. The ones that do will typically sell wares as vendors in the local marketplace. They work hard each and every day of their lives, manual labor. Most hope that their husbands make enough money and bring home in order to buy the food and other essentials supplementing what they grow in the farm. When husbands have more than one wife being very typical in this culture and therefore more than one family, you can imagine how difficult some of these women’s lives are in simply raising their children and how poverty exists as the way of life for most Camerounians.

We’re lucky in this compound because the borehole is already on the property so water is relatively convenient. Mama does have indoor plumbing and so has a bathroom with a small hot water heater hanging on the wall, and a sink with a cold water tap in the kitchen. But, because it takes electricity to pump water inside, the amount of water consumed indoors is minimized to save on the electricity costs. Just imagine the millions of women and children throughout Africa who do not have such conveniences, and have to spend many hours a day just getting water.

So there you have it; a peak into life in Dschang, Cameroun May 1st, 2008. This is what God has decided is part of Antoine and my journey to become Head of State, as of this moment. This too will pass, and I hope to be able to post more in the coming week(s). The internet connection has been abysmally slow so it’s been virtually impossible to actually upload a post, let alone the photos to accompany this newest post.

Please continue to pray for us as we carry on in this very difficult journey. It is not at all glamorous nor easy. We appreciate your support on all levels.

God Bless us. God Bless Cameroun and all of Africa.

Manifestations in Dschang, Yaounde and many other cities

You may have seen in the news that there have been rioting and a lot of disturbance in Cameroun. We traveled to Dschang, where Antoine's mother is living which is about 7 hours (on a good day) by bus from Yaounde. We left Sunday night, February 24th a week ago. The strikes and rioting started Monday, and then continued through Friday, February 29th. We were able to get on a bus Saturday and travel to Yaounde to collect our computers and head back to Dschang. In a way, we’re going to the bush, to start our own kind of Macquis. West Cameroun has a very rich heritage in fighting for their freedom and did so for 12 years with much blood shed, from 1948 – 1960.

It is a village, and quite unlike anything I have ever lived before. We are fortunate in that Antoine's brother, Michele has a house in the family compound which has running water (complete with small hot water heater in bathroom) and indoor plumbing. There can only be a hand full of houses with such facilities in all of Dschang.

Things in this country are really bad…the conditions have deteriorated and the reason for the strike is that the government added 16 Fcfa more tax to the price of a litre of gas. Food prices have escalated to the point where a great many people can not even afford to even buy food. What they used to be able to buy for a family, they can no longer afford. The young people are fed up, with no hope, no jobs and they are hungry and angry, very angry. So although what started on Monday as a strike with the taxi cab drivers, continued with the angry expression of the young people roving the streets, blocking the roads, and breaking into stores and destroying property, no matter who’s property it is. They take tires, old cars and anything else they can get their hands on and put them in the middle of main streets in the town as well as roads leading out of town and light them on fire thus the term "the country is blocked". This is what they call “manifestations”.

They want this man - gone forever!!! This was over a price increase of a few Fcfa of gas. Just wait until the President attempts to change the Constitution to let him stay in power and permit him to run for a third term in 2011. This country will go up in flames - because the youth will block this country. They are not a part of this system, have not effectively been paid off. They have nothing, and they have no hope. They have no families, only themselves to take care of. This means they have nothing to lose and that makes them very dangerous.

The afternoon of Monday, February 25th, the day we first arrived in Dschang, we decided to walk up to the main part of town where there were a lot of people milling around the street. Earlier in the day when we arrived at 6:30 am, the bus was blocked, stopped from advancing, literally, as a tire was burning the middle of the street. Antoine suggested to those youth, that the destruction of public property could only lead to their arrest, and suggested that they should choose a different venue – where they weren’t destroying public property. That afternoon, we saw the result and the tire was burning in the middle of the round about instead.

Most were young men and it was obvious to us that they were not organized; in short, they had no leader! As we strolled through this melee, Antoine began to speak to some of them. He is really good at this; he can just walk up to someone he has never met before, someone in the street, and start talking to them. He will ask them a few poignant questions which lead them to start thinking, and are then ready to listen to what he has to say. As he did this in the center of Dschang, a HUGE crowd gathered around us. It was a bit scary but I stood my ground and prayed and asked for protection. As more and more people gathered around us (there were probably several hundred people by this time) a couple of guys came with a free standing sign which had a bar across the bottom that was about 6 inches off the ground. They begged him to stand on it, so all of the crowd could see him and hear him. A ready made platform, literally. They were cheering and he spoke to them.

The chants were of our political party (RDPF KUMZSE), and “BIYA must go”. The crowd roared. After about 10 minutes, they even asked me to stand on this sign and I spoke as well. Wow! You could hardly hear yourself think – and all of this was spontaneous. Not planned. What you need to know is that Dschang is the place where Antoine’s grandfather granted his political party (KUMZSE) and was president of that party in 1948 – even before Cameroun’s independence. This is the home of the Marquis and is a powerful region in the West of Cameroun. Many people remembered Antoine granting RDPF (KUMZSE) and running his presidential campaign in 1997. It was in 2000, that he went to Mali after the company he established in Douala was burned out by the ruling party. They seem to like to burn things they aren’t happy with here.

While all of this was going on Monday through Friday of last week, all stores were closed for fear of vandilization so we could not even buy supplies or bread or anything until Friday. The good news is that at least in the village there are surrounding farms - even within the town limits - so we were able to eat even if very simple foods. In these situations protein becomes a luxury.

After Monday, March 3rd, we will have our laptops and may be able to plug our computers in at the
Dschang University for an hour or two, twice a week, if we're lucky. That is what we're hoping for. Otherwise, until further notice, emails will be the best way to reach us.

We will begin to organize the young people in Dschang as this is where we will now focus our political party work. Dschang is the place where Antoine granted the seat of our political party RDPF KUMZSE in 1996 so that he was eligible to run in the 1997 Presidential elections. It is important that people know and understand what we are campaigning about. This is not just about getting rid of a dictator. It is about implementing a social plan which will enrich the lives of the citizens, so that maybe, just maybe the children, the future of this nation, will live a better life. We’re all clear that what we do today will impact future generations, and that is why most people who understand what we’re doing and why, are willing to at least listen.

You have to understand, in this country, the word of one man is absolute law. Since these manifestations last week, the President has sent his own military (which is supposed to defend the citizens of Cameroun from outside attack) into the streets with weapons to intimidate the population and keep them in fear. If they are in fear, maybe they can be controlled. We saw this clearly as we were on our way to the bus stop in Yaounde, Sunday night. Several bands of armed military were walking the streets with ‘guns at the ready’.

This is just the beginning of a very dangerous time for Cameroun. The largest percentage of the population is the youth, those between the ages of 16 and 30. At age 20 they are granted suffrage. But most of them do not know what democracy is let alone how to exercise their voice by calling for a referendum vote, to oust this President from his position of ultimate power. There are actually two Constitutions in this country which are alive and well. One is what was granted when this country was ‘given’ its independence in 1960 and which created the system which allows for a centralization of power and the mechanism to allow one man total and absolute power over everything. Even though the second Constitution created a multi-party system and gave those of age, the right to vote, they have not been taught what this really means to them. The power to live and die, is in the hands of the few ‘elite’ those who have no intention to implement social programs which will benefit anyone but themselves. And those programs which are in the ‘public eye’, never see their realization as the money usually finds its way into the pockets of those ‘public servants’ who are the administrators of such programs. Is it any wonder that the people of this nation, nay I say most nations in Africa are still living under the domination of the few, or ruling political party. It is only those of the ruling political party who have been paid off, bought, who are trying to keep this system in place. And now, these groups of youth who are not part of this system are trying to find a way to organize themselves and force change.

You tell me, who will win out? How much blood will be shed in the process? And how can Republics and other supposed democratic nations continue to allow this suffering? When will they step up and actually, through a process as set out by their own Constitutions, teach their younger sibling nations how democracy works; help teach the citizens of these nations that they need not be burdened by dictators who care nothing for their well being? When will these so called developed nations reach out their hands to those leaders deemed “opposition leaders” who do genuinely care for and have a plan, a platform which when implemented will provide the structure to decentralize power giving it back to the people where it belongs, and support them to create change internally? True change can only come from the inside, the grass roots level; it will never last if imposed from the outside. Those of you, who know me, know that is what Antoine and I are here, in Cameroun fighting for.

In peace,

http://www.quotidienmutations.info/mutations/fevrier08/1203306504.php
